18 Simple Tips to Eat Healthy on a (Student) Budget

As a dietetic student, it’s important for me to eat healthy, but with a tight budget, it isn’t always easy. It’s my last year of university and after 5 years of studying, you better believe I’ve developed a few habits to save money. Hopefully some of my tips can help you as well! Before Shopping: Plan ahead Every week, I take one day (usually Saturday mornings) to plan my meals for the next week. I don’t like planning what I’ll eat each day of the week, I find that a little too limiting for me. What I do instead, is I plan a few recipes for the week and eat them whenever I feel like it. Every week, I plan to try at least one new recipe, either…

5-Minute Raw Granola Power Bowl

Mornings are busy for most of us. As much as I would love to start the day with a relaxing yoga routine, followed by a shower and a slow breakfast with coffee and a good book, that’s never the case. My mornings usually start at 5:45 am with a quick shower, 15 minutes of putting minimal makeup and trying to tame my curly hair (then giving up and wearing the same messy ponytail), dressing up in the same old clothes for work, then eating a quick breakfast while answering emails. I then pack a quick lunch, put my coffee in a thermos and run out the door by 7:00 am. It’s real life. These fast mornings don’t allow for complex breakfasts, such as pancakes, waffles, steel-cut oats, omelets or frittatas. No…

Luxurious Chocolate Chia Pudding Parfait

As I look out the window, everything is white. It seems that winter has just started in our part of Canada and I’m not sure how I feel about those recent cold temperatures and constant snow storms. It’s truly a winter wonderland – A very cold winter wonderland. It’s a good thing I’m not tired of winter yet. I’m still excited about walking in the trails, surrounded by snow-covered trees and frozen lakes. I still love coming home to a warm cup of tea and a comforting bowl of soup. I like staying cozy inside during a snow storm, watching a movie and eating cookies. Sadly, my love for winter doesn’t last forever and by the end of the month, I’ll be craving the sunshine…

Dreamy Coconut Macaroon Truffles

Let’s be real, Valentine’s Day needs chocolate. And pasta… And wine. That’s my opinion, but then again, I’m always up for pasta, wine and chocolate. Unfortunately, Valentine’s Day ends up on a Tuesday this year, which means I’ll be celebrating it at the hospital, working in family medicine. <— Not so romantic.  We are planning on going out for a romantic dinner the weekend before though. We’re going to one of our favorite places, which is a cozy Italian restaurant (hello pasta and wine!). I don’t believe that we need a day like Valentine’s Day to spend a romantic evening with our loved one, but honestly, I’m up for any occasion that lets me dress up…

Cheezy Whole Wheat Spiced Garlic Flatbread

It’s the Super Bowl weekend and I’m sharing a last-minute recipe for the occasion.  The truth is, I couldn’t care less about the Super Bowl (sorry, it’s true). I’m not one to watch sports and honestly, I don’t even own cable. My television time is limited to a couple of Netflix shows, so owning cable felt like a waste of money for us. Shaun however, is a big football fan. He did play football in high school and unlike me, he will be watching the Super Bowl.  So for those of you who are planning to watch the big game, I have a great healthy recipe for you to try! I know that people don’t usually care about anything being healthy during the…
