My favorite way to cook steel-cut oats: In the Instant Pot.
Guys, I recently started making steel-cut oatmeal in the Instant pot and it’s life-changing. I know it sounds a bit extreme, but the reality is, it makes it possible to eat steel-cut oats during the week.
Cooking steel cut oats on the stove top does take more time than rolled oats, which is why I don’t cook them often. While the difference is minimal (about 10 minutes), it can make a difference on a busy morning.
By using the Instant pot, you eliminate the need to stand next to the pot and stir. All you do is mix all the ingredients together, set it to cook and leave it until it’s done. That means you can prepare it, get ready for the day and your breakfast will be done by then.
This is my method for steel-cut oatmeal cooked in the Instant pot, which is inspired from Oh She Glows.
I mix all the ingredients together and then set the Instant Pot to cook for 7 minutes on high pressure. When the 7 minutes are done, let the pressure release naturally, without using the steam release for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, you can let out the remaining steam.
It takes 17 minutes to cook, plus the time it takes for the pressure to build up in the beginning. That means, you can throw everything in the Instant Pot, set it to cook, take a shower, get dressed, then your breakfast should be about ready. Flavor it as you like. My go-to is always a mashed banana and peanut butter.

Instant Pot Steel-Cut Oatmeal
- 1 cup steel-cut oats
- 2 1/2 cups milk of choice (I like unsweetened almond milk)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Dried fruits
- Fresh fruits
- Nut or seed butter
- Nuts and seeds
- Add the oats and milk to the Instant Pot. Add vanilla if using. Stir to combine.
- Set the Instant Pot for 7 minutes on high pressure using manual mode or multigrain mode. Set the steam release handle to "sealing".
- Once done, turn off the Instant Pot and do a natural pressure release for 10 minutes (let it sit 10 minutes without releasing the steam). After 10 minutes, release the remaining steam.
- Stir the oats and add more milk if desired. The oats will continue to thicken as it sits. Serve with toppings of choice. My go-to is a mashed banana to sweeten and nut or seed butter.
